Great Scott! Back to the Future Day was about  days ago. While their prediction on the Cubs winning the World Series was not right, the West Side Story went around to teachers and students asking them about the past, present and future of West High School.

Many of the teachers that were interviewed have either taught here a very long time, or they were a student here at one point. Maureen Head, a teacher in the Science Department, was once a student here at West. Since she was a student, she said the amount of diversity and student body population has increased a lot. “I hope that Dr. Shoultz continues to push teachers to develop professionally, providing better education for our student,” Head said. She hopes to see West High’s academics improve even more in the future for students all around.

West High has had a lot of renovations and changes done since its opening in 1968. The school is also pushing the use of technology. Neil Davis has been teaching American Studies at West High for 25 years. He said that since he has started, the amount of students has doubled. He also stated that the teaching system is now more technologically driven, with the introduction of google classroom and smartboards. “I think that students should have more education options outside of West,” Mr. Davis said. He hopes that in the future the delivery method for courses should change. He would like to see a little more student choice for their classes and how they are taught.

Some students also had their opinions on West High, and  Sean Gomendoza ‘19 thinks that the school should split up students so there is less crowding in the hallways. He added that he would also like to see a change in the lunch menu. Many students also would really appreciate air conditioning. Students also said that some of the bathrooms could use renovations, as they appear about as old as the school. Other students also said they would not be surprised if the front green space were to be turned into a parking lot in ten or twenty years. Mrs. Head did not show any concern for the front green space being turned into a parking lot within ten or twenty years. But who knows, maybe where we’re going, “we don’t need roads.”
