Very recently, a Louisiana-native restaurant by the name of Popeyes opened in Coralville, Iowa, and is known for great, delicious chicken wings. However, always with everything good comes something bad. In this rare occasion, if you exchange a good for a bad, the bad may actually outweigh the good.

I went to Popeyes during winter break after receiving a recommendation from my brother, who tried the restaurant in Texas and enjoyed it. I initially denied the recommendation, but my mom pressured me into it. After a long, exhausting visit to Costco where we bought twenty items for twenty dollars, my mom suggested we eat lunch at Popeyes. I agreed to try the new place.

When I went there, I saw something unusual. There was an unbalanced environment overall. People asked the employees to fix their orders at a maniac pace. The employees also argued back instead of fixing the order, which is not something you see everyday at a restaurant. The experience with an atmosphere like this was uncomfortable and messy.

We ordered our food, but I needed water. Typically employees give it to you snap fast, but it took me a whopping five minutes to just get the employee’s attention, and then they got the water, which took about another ten minutes. We waited for about ten more minutes to finally get our food, and the food was delicious, but NOT worth the time!

Of course, the food was good. But this fried chicken might have a hard time matching the finger lickin good of KFC. Even though I don’t eat at KFC often, it seemed to have a better environment. Popeyes also heavily exaggerated their food, because it is one of those restaurants with TV menus and has the chicken to be enlarged and make you say, “Man, that is a ton of juicy, juicy meat!” And looking at that made me think I was getting a replacement for Panchero’s, but sadly, that never happened. The chicken was still good, but tasted a little frail, expired, and cold. I don’t know about the typical audience, but I like my chicken to be hotter than both the sun and the world after the effects of global warming.

After we ate and filled up our thirty pound stomachs, we packed up and left the restaurant. My mom rushed us a little bit, and tried to run outside. After we left, we headed home, when my mom admitted it was a “mistake” to go to Popeyes, stated she didn’t like the food, and only wanted to go again if I asked. This was a change for my mom because she pushed me to go, but then again she never actually ate there and followed my brothers recommendations. I thought the food was good, not as good as Kentucky Fried Chicken, but the service and the depressing environment outweighed the food.
Overall the restaurant was a bit of disgust, but if the employees were to take Charley’s or Panchero’s, for example, and followed how they treat employees as well as maybe work a bit harder without rushing, there is great potential for the restaurant. It also should be a bit cleaner, but that is not necessarily a required effort for at least a restaurant that runs; it is not a top priority for business. They also should not trash customers by ignoring them and fighting back, as that basically destroys their business. Their business can be saved with a little more discipline. The stereotype that I hear associated with Popeyes is you think it sounds good before you eat, afterwards you swear you never go again.
