A Day In Mia Spring’s Life

Music blaring, records spinning, an ’80s movie playing in the background. This may not be an ideal night for most high school students, but for Mia Spring ’20—this is a perfect night.  Many kids listen to Taylor Swift or Lil Uzi but last year, Spring ‘20 took a new interest in 90’s alternative rock and 60’s rock music. Her most prized possessions are her record player and her Red Hot Chilli Peppers band tee.

Some of Spring’s favorite bands are the Beatles, Nirvana and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Now a days it is difficult to see some of your favorite bands or artists. “I would like to go back in time to see all of my favorite bands be popular again and maybe get the chance to meet some of my favorite musicians,” Spring said. If she were to travel back in time she would go to a Nirvana concert. “It would be fun to meet my favorite artists and ask about the real meanings behind the songs.

Spring explains that she likes the music because there was no auto tune and they write all of their own music. “New pop artists now a days aren’t authentic or original. They are all the same.” Spring explains. “It’s over produced and overrated. The lyrics don’t have meaning.” Spring explains. “Pop music doesn’t tell the story in the same way old music does.

Mia has gotten used to her new Iowa City life and fits in just as any other teenager would, but she hasn’t always lived here. She grew up and was partially raised in Ohio. “Things aren’t much different here than it is there but there is a lot more to do and everything is bigger.” Dispite being raised in a different state, Mia still has the same dreams as any other Iowa kid. Vacations to California and College anywhere far away. She hopes to get a scholarship for volleyball in the future, but for now she plays for the Iowa Rockets and played for the West High sophomore team last year. “It’s more of a passion than a hobby.” She explains. “I like to fill my time with things I enjoy rather than things that distract me, even though I get tired of it sometimes, I always end up coming back and playing.”
