A look through the lens

The number of photographs taken every two minutes today, is equal to the number of all of the pictures taken in the 1800s. KeAsia Mullen ’20 has taken this art as a hobby and a passion. Mullen first started photography at age ten when her brother’s girlfriend taught her how to take pictures. Ever since then, photography has been something Mullen has pursued deeply. “You can even make some funny faces and I can make that a cute picture,” Mullen said.

Her love and devotion to photography has caused her skills as a photographer to increase greatly over the years. This fun loving photography style also reflects into Mullen’s personality. “She has a very positive social energy,” Neil Davis says, on of Mullen’s teachers from last year. Devon Halstead ’17 says “since knowing her my life is so much better.”

This spring, KeAsia and her mother were together in a cemetery. Her mother holding flowers, and Mullen ecstatically urged her to stay still. She grabbed her camera and “Snapped that one good picture and it was like, my life is complete,” Mullen said,  describing the shot as one of her all-time favorites. Mullen spends most of her time on her family members, she says that it is much easier to get to shoot them because she is always with them.

Although KeAsia has much love for photography she does not have as much confidence to back it up. Mullen’s boyfriend’s mother asked Mullen to take her son’s senior photos but KeAsia worries they  won’t turn out, “and she’ll be like ‘what are these?’” says Mullen.

Mullen is currently enrolled in the photography class, a class she also took last year, but was interested enough to take it once more. The class teaches her not only the basics like how to use a nice camera, but also more advanced tasks like how to adjust lighting and seek out good places for a balanced photo.

Mullen plans on continuing photography throughout her high school career and keep taking photos at home. Overall, taking pictures has been a way to express herself and show her creativity. Portraits of her friends and family continue to inspire her everyday, and she will continue taking photos, “as long as I’m having fun”.
