Change in Coralville

November brings with it frost, food, and this year, Coralville Elections

The City of Coralville will elect three new City Council members in the City Election on Nov. 7.

The council consists of five people in the community who serve overlapping four year terms. This year, there are seven candidates running for the council, including incumbents Tom Gill and Laurie Goodrich. Councilman Bill Hoeft has decided to not run for reelection this year and council members Jill Dodds and Mitch Gross will remain on council for another two years.

The candidates presented their opinions at forums earlier this season. Many people from the community attended and questions from the public were allowed. Topics such as transportation and economic development were discussed. ¨I want to make sure that as Coralville continues to grow and change, that we’re  bringing all of our citizens along with us,¨ said candidate Meghann Foster during a forum on Oct. 16.

Councilwoman Laurie Goodrich is running for re-election. ¨[Running] was an easy decision because after one term, I have learned and gained experience that I would like to use in directing our city government to continue being the best it can be,¨ Goodrich said. ¨The City Council’s job is to set policy and ordinance. I am a voice for all of Coralville.¨ Goodrich’s campaign is aiming to improve economic and infrastructure growth. “One of my most favorite things about Coralville is of course the people,” said Goodrich.

Miriam Timmer-Hackert is a candidate in the election. “I’ve always enjoyed being involved in politics and in leadership. I’m not nervous in public and city council particularly seems to be a good match for my strengths,” said Timmer-Hackert. “One way I stand out from the other candidates is that I have a lot of  knowledge about environmental issues, and using less power, water, and paper means spending less money.” Timmer-Hackert’s main focus is creating a more sustainable Coralville, promoting her candidacy with ways to be environmentally friendly.

Although the candidates have different views, one thing they share is their want to improve Coralville. “I count it a privilege to give back to the community that has provided so many opportunities to our families along with all the families in Coralville” said Laurie Goodrich.
