Kathleen Washington ’21 peers out of a bottom floor window. Washington was recently accepted into Lines Ballet Summer Intensive and made it past the ballet cut for Juilliard’s prestigious summer program. Of the audition experience, she said, “I do get nervous before an audition, but once I get into the [audition room] everything falls right into place.”

Going into this unit I figured, as I do with most non-writing assignments, that photography would not be something I excelled at. While I may of been right about photography not being my forte, I never could’ve predicted how much I enjoyed this assignment. Photographing West High helped me see the school in a new light, and discover parts of it I wouldn’t of otherwise ventured in to. Additionally, having “photographing an event” as a requirement pushed me out of my “journalistic comfort zone” and lead to me attending an event I would never think to go to. Just as the basketball game was a great way for me to get more involved in the school community, shooting portraits was a fantastic opportunity for me to get to know my fellow journalists. Although I may not be pursuing a career in photography any time soon, I’m grateful I had the chance to experiment in the art and learn some of the basics.
