A world of her own

For Quinn Brewer ’21, writing fantasy is an escape from stress.

Writing fantasy has to be one of the hardest hobbies. On top of all the necessities of creating well rounded characters, a fantasy writer also struggles with building a completely new world and envisioning how it works. Quinn Brewer is only a sophomore in high school and manages to write fantasy on top of teenage life.

Brewer has enjoyed writing since elementary school, where she realized that her pieces always ended up being some of the longest. That was when she realized her writing could end up being like some of her favorite authors like Marissa Meyer who wrote “The Lunar Chronicles.”

“I thought [that] if I ever thought of one story of my own and could write it like that, it would be pretty cool,” Brewer said.

One of the pieces Brewer is working on right now is about what life would be like with supernatural creatures living in our world. It’s based in futuristic Britain and the main character is a prince cyborg. Brewer likes to take a commonly written about type of character, and find a way to set them apart. The prince is unique because he has trouble navigating relationships with his parents. Along with writing her characters in an unusual way, Brewer puts different components into her setting.

“I think about how different the world would be in that situation,” Brewer said. “Like most of mine are in the future […] but they still involve [natural] elements. In the future it would be a lot of technical things.”

I love writing because it also gives a way to do storytelling,

Brewer’s friend Loie Casko ’21 also helps with Brewer’s writing process by reading it and helping her come up with new ideas.

“She loves writing all the time [and is] very funny when making references to [her] characters,” Casko said.

Brewer doesn’t just write fantasy, she enjoys reading it, too. While reading, she likes to think about what her characters might do in that situation for inspiration. Creating characters and different worlds helps Brewer view the world we live in differently, but most importantly it’s a hobby and a way to unwind.

“[Writing] is a way for me to relax mostly and I love writing because it also gives a way to do storytelling, which I really love doing that. I also love listening to people tell stories of their own.”
