Flippin’ & Floppin’
For Malaz Hashim ’20, Interior Designing isn’t just an interest but the future she will build her life on.
The house is a mess. But it’s your task to fix it up and get it onto the market, but how? It’s gonna be hard, but to you—not so much. If you just find the right people. Malaz Hashim ‘20 hopes to one day be able to follow her dream and become an Interior Designer/ Home Renovator. Hashim wants to fix up and design houses not only her own house but also a whole bunch of others. “I just like putting stuff together, mixing and matching type. I like putting colors together, decorating rooms,” Hashim said. “I like creating things that make others happy.”
It all started with a simple flip of a channel onto HGTV. At first, Hashim thought the shows were just okay but then after realizing it was constantly what she turned to when she was watching TV, she realized there was more to it. “I want this to be my future,” Hashim said.
Designing houses hasn’t always been Hashim’s dream job. She used to dream of becoming a nurse, a vet and even a dentist. But now that doesn’t interest her anymore; instead, creating her dream house sounds like a lovely thing to pursue and do. Hashim has started making this dream a reality by starting to take interior design class at school. Hashim thinks that the class was very useful because without the class she feels as if there would be no emotion or personalization within versus houses. Interior Design teacher, Sadie Waser says “Malaz was a great student and had a very creative mind and seemed to love what she was doing throughout the tri.”
“I wanna design my own house, one for my parents and brother too.” said Hashim. Designing her own dream house from the ground up is the first step she has taken in actually starting. Hashim has her whole house planned out and it starts with a beautiful 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom house. Big ones you see in the magazines with her own personal touches. A large dining area, living area and even a huge yard maybe even a garden. She plans on making the house a reality shortly after gaining a little more knowledge when attending college at the school of Interior Design of New York.
“ I wanna go there because designing is popular up there. That’s where a lot of them [Interior Designers] start off.” Hashim says
Hashim is inspired by Interior designers such as Christina El Moussa who stars on the show “Flip or Flop” with her husband Tarek El Moussa on HGTV. “Flip or Flop is one of my favorites on HGTV because she’s [Christina El Moussa] a woman doing what she loves with her husband. That is my ultimate dream someday.” Hashim says.
