Scream Acres

When these screams are heard, don’t call the police.

Many people showed up at Bloomsbury Farm at a chilling 31°F to enter Scream Acres on Oct. 28. Every October about 80 workers dress up on the weekend and head down to Bloomsbury Farm to put on a show for the thousands of people that attend. All four attractions deliver screams while catchy, modern pop music plays in the background. At every corner a devilish face would pop out.

The four different attractions include the Slaughterhouse, Carnival Chaos, The Cornfield and Cell Block Z.

The Slaughterhouse, being the first one in sight, always has the longest line. Kalynn Culver ’19 had her first experience at Scream Acres this October. “If it was possible to shorten the first line that would be good. It took us a long time to get through the very first one,” Culver said.

But the wait is worth it. When entering, you’re immediately met with a set of stairs leading up and making a turn into the darkness. Filled with eerie pictures and bloody butcher rooms, this place will for sure give goosebumps.

Carnival Chaos allows the participant(s) to journey through a colorful maze. With clowns waiting at each corner, this haunt will make you giggle with fear. A spinning room with neon color splats, red and white curtains that when moved reveal a clown, and strobe lights are included. “I liked the clown one because I thought it was the scariest and it had a lot of unusual and unique scenes in it,” Culver said.

The Cornfield is described by Scream Acres as a fan favorite. When going through this outside attraction, you can encounter a man with a chainsaw, witches, creepers, and many other terrifying creatures.

“The corn maze was my favorite because it was more scary and it was longer.” said Anahi Paredes ’20 who joined her friend at Scream Acres. But with any other attraction there were different views. Culver ’19 said “Some attractions such as the corn maze wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, but the rest were.”

Cell block Z was recently added to Scream Acres in 2016. Having to enter an old school bus with zombies popping out at any given moment gives an unnerving feeling. Zombies can be seen throughout this prison at every corner, including the roof. Last year this haunt was not as expected because it had seemed to be a last minute doing. With open areas everywhere it did not give much of a scare like the others. But this year Scream Acres has upped their game by giving their participants a good shock.

No matter how scared you get, there is no turning back. With tickets costing $20-$45, the actors really give their audience a bang for their buck.“I thought it wouldn’t be scary, but it turned out to be really scary.” said Paredes ’20.

The farm consists of frightening sculptures, objects such as the hearse car that has “Scream Acres” written on the sides, and colorful billboards that gives the participants a sense of real spookiness. A beautiful chandelier is on display in the barn while the people wait for The Slaughter house and gave a warm feel to the freezing night. The park also provided their customers with a warm shack to sit down, enjoy the food and beverages, and socialize with others. “I wouldn’t change anything because like everything seemed perfect the way it was.” said Paredes ’20.
