West High School Dance Marathon (WHSDM) is a club with a cause.  Very popular here at West, dance marathon is a club that raises money for pediatric cancer and in years past they have raised $67,837, $55,000, and $21,000. Each year, they host a six hour mini dance marathon that they call the “Big Event” where people come and dance for the people who cannot dance themselves.  If you would like to get involved, visit the WHSDM Facebook page to sign up.

Math teacher Julie Many is also a part of WHSDM. “WHSDM is special because students get to work with the school and the community for a cause that they’re very passionate about,” Many said.

Dance marathon isn’t just a club to go hang and have fun. Yet, they still do that, there is a lot of work put into it every single year. “From DJ, to decorations, to getting the Dance Marathon families involved…it truly is a team effort,” Many said.

Many events have lead up to the year’s big event.  Recently, they hosted the 100 Days Out, 100 days away from the big event, in the West High cafeteria. Students dressed as superheros and came ready to dance.  Along with this event was the hair drive where students and teachers had the opportunity to cut their hair in support for the kids that cannot have hair. Every year WHSDM hosts a Dash for Dashiell, another citizen who lost his battle with cancer.

Earlier this year WHSDM started a new tradition, the annual Flash Fest.  Austin “Flash” Schroeder lost his battle with cancer this past April.  The community came together in remembrance of Austin and celebrated his life in dancing, food, and games. Avery Flick, the young daughter of a teacher in the district, also recently lost her battle with cancer. There are many more families in need of help; not just in the Iowa City area, but nationwide. Paige Brazina ’16 is a morale captain this year and she gives a lot of time and energy into recruiting people for her team.  “It is definitely not too late. If you are interested, I suggest you sign up as soon as possible because WHSDM is so much more than just our main event,” Brazina said.

Remember it’s #FTK!
