The Value of Money: Different Minds

Money is, of course, something everybody deals with often, if not daily.

People, especially students, have the hard task of deciding what to do in the future–posing the question: are we motivated by money or by the things that we relish doing?

When asked if money is pivotal to their lives, the majority of interviewed students declared it is important, but not the most important thing. Tanim Haque ’20 said that money is indeed vital. “You basically need money for everything; eating and clothing. You need money in life, you can’t live without money basically in America.”

Capitalism is how America functions, but it can be stressful. Interestingly, West High students seem to be confident about the value of money in their lives. “Money can buy things that you want, although, I think that in the end, it doesn’t buy your happiness,” said Alex Schwickerath’ 18.

When discussing the amount of money students expect to receive in their future jobs, Joseph Lin ’17 said, “As long as it is enough to live a comfortable life, it should be fine.”

Students were surprisingly noble and reserved  when asked what would they do with $1,000,000. “Put it into a bank account and use it to go to college,” said Julia Lassner’ 18. Tasneem Amin’ 18  said, “I would continue to help people.”
