Playing Her Way Through Life

How band changed Lexi Moores life

Sometimes, you have to find what brings out your inner self. Through playing clarinet joining marching band, Lexi Moore ’19 was able to do just that.

It seems like Moore has always had a passion for music, since she started band in fifth grade through the school, and started taking actual lessons for clarinet in seventh grade. “Most people consider clarinet players to be shy and reserved, but I’m very outgoing,” Moore said. Throughout her years in band she learned how to open up to her peers, met some of her best friends and became her true self. For Moore, band was something she could lean on when things got a bit rough.

Moore has seen band as a way for her to express herself and find her passion. “I like how everyday there’s a chance to get better and there’s always someone there to support you and help you”, Moore said. “[Band has] helped me meet some of my best friends ever.” Moore said. Lexis friend, Ellie agrees with that. “Band has helped our relationship grow a lot and help us maintain our friendship throughout our years at west.” Ellie Brown, ‘19 said.

Along with band, Moore always likes to help with theatre, and with helping with the set in musicals as well. “I got into theatre by signing up to help with hair backstage. I ended up really not liking it, and I soon found that set was the way for me to go, and that I enjoyed it a lot more,” Moore said.

Lexi recently helped out with the musical last spring, and it was a very good experience for her. “There is such a wide variety of people there and everyone is different in their own way yet everyone accepts you, which is cool,” Moore said.

As of now, Lexi wants to make All State Band and SEIBA which consists of the best instrument players in Iowa. “After my first year of taking lessons, I got into my first honor band, and it was a big accomplishment me,” Moore said. She is working towards making All State still, and has high hopes.

“I’ve opened myself up to different people after I started band, there’s so many different people there, athletes, quiet kids, loud kids, just every type and there’s just so many people that I’ve become close with and band is just very special to me,” Moore said.
