Many people wouldn’t realize this, but Rachel Podhajsky ’21 is certainly a proactive person in many different ways; she does debate, tennis and theatre. Podhajsky is into theatre and had participated in the backstage crews, like props and makeup. She recently auditioned for one of the roles in the play, which was nerve racking.

“Rachel is an amazing theatre student. I am so delighted that she is in the play and that she is a part of Theatre West”

Imagine your standing in front of people who are judging you to get a part in a play that will be in front of a lot more people, seeing the list of actors that made it. that’s scary for even the most confident people. “Of course I was nervous,” Podhajsky said.

Podhajsky had only really done backstage theatre. Doing it up and in front of the people is different and weird, as expected. She was nervous hearing them call her name and making her do something she simply cannot mess up.

“It was just kinda something I wanted to try out since she said it was a lot of fun,” Podhajsky said.

The auditioning process was a little less fun for Podhajsky, but an exhilarating process. “I was like feeling really calm and, I was really calm and collected, I had like my script I was writing things down until I was sitting on stage and going through these scenes and she was like ‘okay, in this scene we’re gonna have Rachel and X other people’ and I was just like, ‘oh wow, I have to go up there now,’ so [I] kinda panicked right in that moment, but I think I did okay because Mrs. Nahra did cast her in the play. She clearly did do okay seeing as she did get a role in the play.

“They needed a lot of people for this play, I think, I saw lots of people telling me to audition and Nahra is my English teacher and she wanted some people to audition and I was like, “Okay, I’ll go for it.”

Despite the nervousness. Podhajsky obtained the role of the clerk in Miracle of 34th street.

Podhajsky didn’t really have that much to do with props the first time she had done it last year. She “didn’t really have a good first impression” as she put it. She had to put a chair onto the stage for the teaser then she had to do it again. She enjoyed doing theatre and props but she also wants to try other crews in theatre along with it.

Podhajsky plans on doing other crews this year, such as  sound of the actors when speaking. ” I wanna try another crew for this play because I enjoy makeup. I have a more open schedule now, so I don’t really wanna do something that low  [of] time requirement.” she said.
