I’m not going to lie; this photography unit absolutely terrified me… However, the funny thing is that I’ve always been fascinated by photography. Like most people, I enjoy a good aesthetic photo. I also love walking through photo galleries of museums. Although I had great appreciation for the art of photography, I knew little to nothing about cameras, shutter speed, or ISO prior to this unit. I was unaware there was even a word called “aperture.” I didn’t even know how to turn the flash on and off. Sad, I know. When I started this unit I was very self-conscious about my ignorance. As I’ve gone through these past few weeks I’ve gradually become more familiar with camera techniques and photography in general. I’ve realized just how important photography is in journalism. A picture can communicate so many different emotions, thoughts, and ideas that are often hard to put into words. I know I am not nor will I ever be an amazing photographer, but it’s reassuring that I’m not completely clueless anymore.
